It was supposed to be a normal, joyful day at the beach for celebrity designer Damian Corney and his family. But a routine dip in the ocean quickly spiralled into a life-threatening emergency for their one-year-old poodle, Bruno, leaving them with a staggering $12,000 veterinary bill. Corney, well-known to TV audiences from his stints on The Block, My Reno Rules, and Oops! I Bought a Pub, watched in horror as what seemed like a harmless afternoon of splashing turned critical. Bruno had inadvertently swallowed a dangerous amount of seawater, which found its way into his lungs, triggering a severe case of aspiration pneumonia.
“We had never heard of seawater being dangerous for dogs and couldn’t believe a day at the beach could lead to such a dangerous condition as pneumonia,” Damian told news.com.au. The shift in Bruno’s health was sudden and terrifying for the couple and their young children. “Bruno wasn’t acting like his usual self,” Corney said. “All of a sudden, he was heavily breathing, he wouldn’t eat or drink and was lethargic. We immediately knew something was wrong and rushed him to the vet.”
The young pup ended up fighting for his life, spending two gruelling weeks in a Melbourne animal hospital while his family waited anxiously. “The whole family was very upset, our kids especially,” Corney said. “It was a really difficult time for all of us when he had to stay at the vet, and we didn’t know how long it would take for him to recover. It was a huge relief when he finally arrived home, and we were all reunited.”
Fortunately for the family, their pet insurance covered 90% of the massive $12k bill, sparing them from additional financial stress during an already scary medical crisis.
Bruno’s worrying hospital stay highlights a broader trend across Australia. According to new claims data from provider CoverMy Pet, the nation’s most beloved, high-profile dog breeds are also the ones most frequently clocking up high-stakes vet bills. Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and Cavoodles, which share a lineage with Bruno, top the list for the most common canine veterinary visits. For feline owners, Ragdolls and Burmese cats lead the pack for unexpected medical claims.
Industry experts note that while designer crossbreeds remain wildly popular, owners are often caught off guard by the genetic health challenges these dogs can inherit from both parent breeds.
Despite Australia having one of the highest rates of pet ownership globally, with seven in ten households owning a companion, it conversely has one of the lowest rates of pet insurance.
As inflation and cost-of-living pressures squeeze household budgets, an increasing number of families are opting to skip insurance or defer routine check-ups and vaccinations. It’s a gamble that can prove devastating when an emergency strikes. Things like diagnostic testing, overnight hospital stays, and intensive care can instantly skyrocket into the thousands of dollars.
While average comprehensive plans in Australia typically hover around $134 a month, a shift toward budget-friendly entry-level products, like CoverMy Pet’s new basic coverage starting from $22 a month, aims to offer a middle-ground safety net so families do not have to make heartbreaking choices in the vet triage room.
For the Corney family, the experience was a stark reminder that the unexpected can happen in seconds, even during a peaceful day by the pier. Thankfully, the scare will not change their tight-knit bond with their pet. “This experience won’t deter us from taking Bruno on future adventures,” Corney said. “He is such an important part of our family! My wife and I bring him to work with us every day, and the girls love having him come on our family trips. We can’t imagine ever leaving him behind!”
